Amplifiers play a key role in electronic circuits and are available in voltage and power amplifiers. These kinds of amplifiers are mainly used at the output for increasing the input voltage. However, the voltage amplifier improves the voltage signal whereas the power amplifier improves the complete input power signal. Similarly, an amplifier IC is a kind of integrated circuit, mainly designed for amplifying audio signals. This IC uses a small input audio signal to increase its power by allowing it to drive headphones or speakers to generate audible sound. Amplifier ICs are commonly utilized in a variety of audio devices wherever audio amplification is necessary like; home theaters, stereo systems, smartphones, and portable speakers. What is BA5406 IC?

The BA5406 is a monolithic power, dual-OTL amplifier IC including two low-frequency and high-output power amplifiers. This IC has a 5W rated output of 2 into a 3ohm load with a 12Volts power supply and it has a 2.8W into a 3ohm load. BA5406 amplifier IC includes good low-voltage characteristics, and it generates little radio-band noise whenever the applied power is small. This IC is the perfect choice for 9V power supply stereo radio cassette players.

The BA5406 IC utilizes a high permissible power dissipation package with a very simple heatsink design. This IC not only beats basic characteristics, but it also has an in-built thermal shutdown, soft clip circuit, and standby circuits.

The working of this amplifier IC is, whenever the audio signal is provided to the transistor’s base terminal in an audio amplifier IC then the signal is amplified and outputs from the collector terminal. So this procedure will be repeated several times with several transistors working mutually to amplify the signal to the preferred level.

  • Pin-1(VCC): It is a power supply pin that supplies the IC.
  • Pin-2 (OUTPUT1): It is an output1 of the chip.
  • Pin-3(Boot STRAP1): It is the first BST pin of IC that is required for DC to DC converters through a bootstrap circuit.
  • Pin-4(NFB1): The first NFB (negative feedback) pin is used to sense negative output voltage.
  • Pin-5(INPUT1): It is the first input pin of IC.
  • Pin-6 & 7 (FILTER): The filter pin of IC allows a particular band of frequencies to supply throughout it exclusive of any attenuation and satisfy others lying outer surface of this band.
  • Pin-8(INPUT2): It is the second input pin of IC.
  • Pin-9(NFB2): It is the second negative feedback pin of IC.
  • Pin-10(Boot STRAP2): It is a second BST pin of IC.
  • Pin-11(OUTPUT2): It is the second output pin of the chip.
  • Pin-12 (GND): It is the ground pin of IC.

The features and specifications of BA5406 IC include the following.

  • It is a 12-pin amplifier IC, available in an SIP package.

Stereo Amplifier Circuit with BA5406 IC

The stereo amplifier circuit with BA5406 IC is shown below. This circuit uses BA5406 IC which transmits a 5W separate channel into a 4 ohms speaker. In addition, it needs a 5 to 15-voltage supply, so it does not need an o/p coupling transformer. This IC generally dissipates heat, thus the circuit needs a heat sink. Moreover, ensure that the power supply should be filtered as well as regulated.

The required components to make this stereo amplifier circuit mainly include; a 12V DC supply, PCB, BA5406 IC, 22K Potentiometers, 2.2 ohms and 120ohms resistors, 47uf, 220nf, and 470uf electrolyte capacitors and a speaker. Connect the circuit as per the circuit shown below.

Working

The stereo amplifier circuit can use the C11 and C12 capacitors as input decoupling capacitors for both the right and left channels. It uses the C1 and C5 capacitors as bootstrap capacitors for the right and the left channels respectively. C3 capacitor and R2 resistor make a Zobel network.

Thus, the main function of this network is to decrease oscillation and improve the amplifier stability. Likewise, the C4 and C8 capacitors are coupling capacitors mainly for the output whereas C9 and C10 capacitors are there mainly to filter noise. Furthermore, the circuit uses potentiometers to control the speaker’s volume. It uses this stereo amplifier circuit within audio players, stereo module systems, Television, etc.

Applications

The applications of BA5406 IC include the following.

  • Mini-audio systems, stereo radio cassette players, LCD TVs, and many more use the BA5406 IC. It ideally suits use within stereo radio cassette recorders due to its minimum RF radiation.
  • Low-power-based car audio applications use it.
  • Small electronic applications that do not need much power use a simple stereo BA5406 audio amplifier circuit.
  • An audio amplifier circuit uses this BA5406 IC to provide 3 watts of maximum output power for each channel.
