A diode is a semiconductor device designed with 2 terminals with positive and negative polarity. They are classified into a number of types based on the design, properties, and operating parameters. Diodes such as PN, Zener, Varactor, PIN, and more are examples of classification of the diode.

A Varactor diode is a 2 terminals anode and cathode with a variable capacitor. A varactor diode is also called varicap, turning diode, resistance diode, or a variable capacitance. The main working of this diode depends on the capacitor operation.

The construction of this diode is similar to the PN junction diode. A standard PN diode operates in 2 bias conditions forward and reverse, but a varicap diode operates only in reverse bias conditions with a change in capacitance value. Where the width of the varicap diodes junction in reverse bias is wider.

Allowing the capacitor to charge at this biased condition. These diodes are further classified as hyper abrupt, abrupt, and gallium-arsenide. They benefit in terms of low noise, less power, and small size. But limit in terms of operating in reverse bias condition. The application of Varica includes frequency multiplier, VC-oscillator, and parametric amplifier.
