This is helpful for users who are preparing for their exams, interviews, or professionals who would like to brush up their fundamentals on Tunnel Diode.

A Tunnel diode is a type of PN diode designed by Tokyo scientist Leo Esaki in 1958. During this discovery of diode, Leo has observed the heavily doping condition to diode has generated negative based resistance.

This generation of negative-based resistance has further reduced the current flow across the diode. This diode works on the principle of Tunneling also called the Quantum mechanical effect and its characteristics are plotted using VI characteristics in forward and reverse bias conditions.

VI characteristics operate in 3 regions tunneling current, negative resistance, and valley point. A heavy doping-based condition is observed in forward bias condition of the tunnel diode. In reverse bias conditions, the diode acts as a fast rectifier.

These diodes benefit in terms of switching property, minimum noise, less power dissipation, and generation of negative resistance. But limits in terms of cost, zero isolation between input and output, low output swing, and low power devices. The applications include oscillators, amplifiers, storage devices, etc.
