All the Avalanche Photodiode Questions & Answers given below include a hint and a link wherever possible to the relevant topic. This is helpful for users who are preparing for their exams, interviews, or professionals who would like to brush up their fundamentals on Avalanche Photodiode.

Avalanche photodiode is a source-independent semiconductor device. This diode was discovered by Jun-ichi a Japanese scientist. Avalanche photodiode works on the principle of photoelectric effect where the input provided to this diode is in light form and output obtained is in electric form.

Avalanche photodiode is designed using Silicon and InGaAs materials and consists of 2 terminals Anode and Cathode. This diode has a similar operation to the Zener diode. It operates in the depletion region with a higher value of negative resistance in reverse bias conditions.

The operation of Avalanche photodiode is calibrated using VI characteristics which is a 2D representation. Breakdown in this diode is observed in the negative region or reverse bias region with an increase in negative voltage, thereby increasing the negative value of current and resistance.

The advantages of Avalanche photodiode include high gain, enhanced speed, and high sensitivity. The demerits of Avalanche photodiode include high input voltage, high noise, and nonlinear output. They are mainly used in laser range finders, fiber optics, and quantum sensing.
