An accelerometer is one kind of electromechanical device, used for measuring acceleration forces on an object so that the position of an object within the space as well as object movement monitoring can be determined.  The principles of an accelerometer are Newton's law and Hooke's law.

There are different types of accelerometers like; potentiometric, piezoelectric, variable reluctance, and LVDT. The displacement sensing or seismic type accelerometer and piezoelectric accelerometers are frequently used for the measurement of acceleration. The advantages of the seismic accelerometer are they are simple, reliable, durable, and effective, and the disadvantages are spring system is not always accurate and fluctuations in the mass lead to wrong calculations. 

The accelerometers are used for flight stabilization, used in tablet commuters, digital cameras, etc. The advantages of piezoelectric accelerometers are they are rugged & inexpensive, have high impedance, high sensitivity, and high-frequency response, and the disadvantages are they are sensitive to temperature, hysterias error, have less longevity, and decreased efficiency with time. 

The quartz, tourmaline, and BGO materials are natural crystals, and titanate and zirconate PB materials are ferroelectric crystals. The advantages of accelerometers are they are small in size, non-invasive, lightweight, non-reactive, and have a low subject burden. The disadvantages of accelerometers are they are expensive, and cannot be worn during aquatic events.
