An electronic device designed for performing binary addition of more than 3 bits is called a ripple carry adder. A ripple carry adder is a combinational logic circuit that adds n number of bits.  They are 4-bits, 8-bits, and 16bits.

A ripple carry adder is mainly designed to overcome the limitation of half adder and full adder operation. It comprises of sum and carry components and is designed using logic gates such as basic logic gates –AND, OR, NOT; and universal gates XOR and NAND.

The important point of RCA is that the final output is already known whenever carry output is generated by every full adder stage and provided as input to the next stage.

The advantages of ripple carry adder includes replacing HA  and FA operation, simplex, and performing n-bit addition. The disadvantages of ripple carry adder includes High propagation delay, Minimum operation speed, and Multi-level logic. The applications of ripple carry adder includes a microprocessor, DSP, and N-bit adders.
