Generally, voltage regulators are used frequently in electronic circuits to provide a stable output voltage for different input voltages. The series of fixed-voltage regulator ICs are designed mainly for a broad range of applications like on-card regulation for the noise & distribution elimination problems linked with single-point regulation. Similarly, LM7824 IC is a voltage regulator where the 7824 term in this IC indicates two meanings where 78 means that it is a +ve voltage regulator & 24 means that it supplies 24Volts output voltage. These voltage regulators deliver up to 1.5 Amps of output current. These ICs can be used as fixed voltage regulators with exterior components to attain variable output voltages & currents. What is LM7824 IC?

The LM7824 IC is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator, available in the TO-220 package with several fixed output voltages. This IC uses thermal shutdown, safe operating area protection, and internal current limiting, which makes it indestructible. When sufficient heat sinking is given to this IC, these voltage regulator ICs deliver above 1A output current.

This series of voltage regulator ICs has some inbuilt features like; output transistor safe area compensation, thermal overload protection, internal short circuit protection, etc. So, these features of regulators will make them resistant to overload. To provide constant functioning in all load situations, an appropriate input bypass capacitor must be selected like tantalum or mylar with < 0.33F internal impedance at higher frequencies. This capacitor must be located across the regulator’s input terminals.

LM7824 IC Working

LM7824 fixed-voltage regulator IC works by limiting the output voltage to a set value apart from the input voltage (or) load conditions. This voltage regulator provides positive 24V voltage as output to provide a suitable power source mainly for most TTL components. So this IC is very popular in a variety of applications like on-card regulation to remove noise as well as distribution issues. This IC can suffer from heavy heat loss thus a Heat Sink is suggested for projects that use more current.

  • Pin-1 (Input (V+)): It is an unregulated input voltage pin of the IC.
  • Pin-2 (GND): It is a ground pin that is connected to the GND terminal.
  • Pin-3 (Output (Vo)): It is an output-regulated pin that provides +24V.

The features and specifications of LM7824 IC include the following.

  • It is a 24V positive voltage regulator IC.
  • This IC is available in TO-3, TO-220 & KTE package.
  • It has internal thermal overload & short circuit current limiting protections.
  • Its maximum junction temperature is 125 degrees Celsius.
  • Its output current ability is 1.5 Ampere.
  • The max input current ranges from 1.6 A to 2 A at 1.5A to maintain the output.
  • Its input voltage minimum is 33V.
  • Its input voltage maximum is 40V.
  • Output current is 1.5Amps.
  • It is a 24Volts positive voltage regulator that produces a dropout voltage of 1.0Amps.
  • Load regulation & line regulations are at 480 mV.
  • This IC includes a low quiescent current at 8mAmps.
  • The range of quiescent current change is from 0.5mA to 0.8mA.
  • Its maximum DC resistance is 2.2 ohms, while the output Noise Voltage is 10Hzf -100kHz.
  • The minimum input voltage is 33V whereas the maximum range of input voltage is from 35Volts to 40Volts.

How to Long Run LM7824 IC Safely within a Circuit?

To acquire long-term performance using LM7824 IC within a circuit, it is recommended to not drive > 1.5A load throughout this IC. A suitable heat sink must be used with this voltage regulator IC. This IC must be operated always in >0 degrees centigrade and < +125 degrees centigrade temperatures. Its storage temperature must be from -65 degrees C to +150 degrees C.

A simple 24Volts DC power supply circuit with LM7824 IC is shown below. LM7824 IC used in this circuit is a 24 V 1.5 A fixed voltage controller, available in the TO 220 package. The required components to make this circuit mainly include; a 24 V 2 A transformer, 2A diode bridge, 2200 u F, 330 n F and 100 n F capacitors, LM7824 voltage regulator IC, and 1N4001 Diode. Connect this circuit as per the simple power supply circuit shown below.

Working

The above circuit works by using a few external components since all the necessary hardware is within the IC. After that, you can utilize a 110V to 24V DC transformer also in place of a 230V to 24V 2A transformer. So the IN4001 diode in this circuit blocks feedback that must get to the IC LM7824. The D1 bridge diode connects conversely to the 2A. This circuit needs a heat sink because of the produced heat during operation. Thus, finally, it provides a 24V DC supply. This DC power supply circuit is used generally within low-voltage applications like battery charging, airplane applications, car applications, and low-voltage and low-current-based applications.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages of LM7824 ICs include the following.

  • The LM7824 IC is available with thermal overload protection internally that shuts down the circuit whenever it is overloaded.
  • This voltage regulator IC has short circuit current limiting and output transistor secure-area compensation internally.
  • These voltage regulator ICs are very easy to utilize and don’t need any external components (or) circuitry mainly for voltage regulation.
  • This IC can be utilized with external components to achieve adjustable output voltages & currents.
  • It delivers up to 2Amps of current with a heat sink & delivers around 500mAmps current without a heat sink.
  • This IC can be designed to be used in a wide range of applications.

The disadvantages of LM7824 ICs include the following.

  • This voltage regulator IC suffers from huge heat loss thus a Heat Sink is suggested for projects.
  • This IC depends on bandgap references.
  • It has huge loss & its efficiency is poor whenever there is a huge variation in between the I/O voltages.
  • The input voltage should be higher as compared to the output voltage by generally 2.5 volts. So it may not work with particular power sources like 6V batteries.

The applications of LM7824 IC include the following.
