This article lists 50 Optical Encoder MCQs for Engineering Students. The Optical Encoder Questions & Answers below include solutions and links to the relevant topic. This is helpful for users who are preparing for their exams and interviews, or professionals who would like to brush up on the fundamentals of the Optical Encoder.

An optical encoder is a sensor that is used to measure linear displacement or angular displacement. An optical means light sensing and the encoder means the output will be in digital format. The classification of an optical encoder is categorized into two types they are incremental encoder and absolute encoder.

An incremental encoder is one type of optical encoder that can be a single tract encoder or multi-track encoder. The main disadvantage of a single-track incremental encoder is we cannot say whether it is clockwise or anti-clockwise by looking at the output.

The incremental encoders are simple, low cost, have a lower resolution, homing needed for positioning, and position not retained after power loss. The absolute encoders are complex, expensive, have higher resolution, no homing is needed for positioning, and position is retained after power loss.

The light source, photodetector, and code disk (opaque disk) are the components of an optical encoder. In an incremental optical encoder, the resolution can be increased by reading both falling edges and rising edges. An absolute optical encoder measures the rotational displacement that can be measured per bit change.
