The cyclo converters are used to control the speed of an alternating current machine such as cement mill drives, synchronous motors, ship propulsion, rolling mill drives, ore grinding mills, etc. The three phases to three phases, single phase to single phase, single phase to three phases, and DC link cycloconverter with parallel resonant circuits are the types of cyclo converters. 

The limitations of cyclo converters are a large number of thyristors are required, and the output frequency is limited to one-third of the input frequency.  The advantages of cyclo converters are extremely attractive for large power, low-speed drives, and no intermediate DC state is required for AC-AC conversion. 

The disadvantages of cyclo converters are input power factor is poor, the control circuit is difficult, and more distortion at low frequencies is not possible. The blocking mode and circulating current mode are the modes of cycloconverter. An intergroup reactor is needed in circulating current mode.  

The midpoint configuration and bridge configuration come under a single-phase cycloconverter, and the circulating and non-circulating type comes under a three-phase cycloconverter. The speed control of alternating current motors, motion control of the alternating current motor, HVDT, aircraft power supply, mobile power supply, etc are the applications of cycloconverter.
