Electronic circuits operating at distinct frequencies and voltages result in distinct output. To obtain the desired output from applied input to the circuit and maintain the signal in a specific range a clipper and clamper circuits are designed. A clipper is an electronic component that is used for clipping either the positive or negative portion of the applied input wave to obtain desired output wave shape according to the expected result.

Clipper circuits are classified into 2 types depending on the diode position in the circuit namely biased clipper circuit and unbiased clipper circuit. These clipper circuits are further classified as positive and negative circuits. Where in a positive clipper circuit the positive portion of full-wave is clipped off.

In a negative clipper circuit, the negative portion of full-wave is clipped off. Another classification of clipper circuits is called the combinational clipper circuit which is the combination of positive and negative clipper circuits.

The main advantage of using these clippers is that one can obtain desired output waveform, removing disturbance in resultant waves. These are used in applications such as waveshapers, circuit protectors and act as potential dividers.
